Newly single billionaire Daniel Knight has it all—luxurious estates, a successful company—and a whole lot of stress. After his personal physician orders Daniel to take a vacation, he takes off for his private island in the Virgin Islands.

Dr. Sander Jonas has lusted after his patient for years but due to a pesky sense of professional ethics—not to mention Daniel’s former boyfriend—he’s never made a move on Daniel. But when Daniel is injured, Sander rushes to his boss’s aid and finally gives in to the overwhelming attraction he’s kept hidden for too many years.

Scorching water sex with custom-made adult toys, hot, loving nights surrounded by lush palm trees and white sandy beaches proves to be exactly what the doctor ordered to heal Daniel’s wounded heart.

  Chapter One

Daniel has had an accident and he needs you to come.

Despite reassurances from Daniel Knight’s personal assistant that his billionaire boss’s hip injury was relatively minor, those dreaded words continued to roll around in thirty-three-year-old Dr. Sander Jonas’ mind as he impatiently waited for the private jet to land. With Daniel also refusing to see a doctor in the Virgin Islands where Daniel was vacationing at his remote island estate, Sander was concerned about possible tetanus and infection in the cut. Therefore Madilyn had secretly arranged for him to fly over to check on his patient.

He’d been Daniel’s on-call physician and good friend for several years and he knew the man could be stubborn as sin. Consequently there was no use in calling and talking sense to him. Besides, whether Daniel was in the city or in another country—and if he called Sander or a member of his staff asked him to come—he would go to him.

The job with Daniel had come with the perfect paycheck. It allowed Sander to forgo opening a medical practice and permitted him to follow his lifelong dream of dedicating all his time to volunteer at free clinics. And in his hometown of Chicago, his skills were needed the most.

Unfortunately Sander’s dream job was showing huge cracks. It had started several months ago with Daniel’s very bad breakup with his French boyfriend Jacques. Since then the floodgates of lust and attraction had opened and Sander had been excessively fantasizing about getting it on with Daniel.

But in allowing his feelings to secretly flourish, he’d put himself into an unethical position. He needed to give Daniel notice and quit. Then he could finally confess his attraction to him. It had been torture keeping his feelings to himself, especially because Daniel had been in a serious personal relationship with another man and Sander was the billionaire’s employee.

The pilot’s voice crackled over the speaker and warned Sander to buckle his seat belt. As he gazed out the window into the tropical twilight, he spied white-capped ocean waves below. In the near distance Daniel’s island loomed. Palm trees swayed near sandy-white beaches and a moment later he spied the rows of runway lights to the private island’s airstrip.

Excitement whipped through him and he shifted edgily in his chair. He couldn’t wait to look into Daniel’s bright-green eyes and experience that nice jittery feeling he got in the pit of his belly whenever he looked at his boss.

Just thinking about kissing him made carnal heat whip through his body. To be able to touch him without reservation was going to blow Sander’s mind. First though he needed to find out if the attraction was mutual. Until now they’d both behaved professionally and friendly but if he hadn’t misread those heated gazes lately, Sander suspected Daniel wanted to be with him in every sense of the word.

“Is that my jet arriving?” Daniel asked his young assistant as he grabbed a towel from the top of the load of laundry she’d just finished folding. He’d been dying to go for a swim all day. But due to his throbbing hip injury from this morning’s brush with a coral reef while he’d been scuba diving and Madilyn’s stern warning looks, he’d stayed out of the ocean.

Fortunately he had managed to wrangle an agreement from her that he could just take a quick dip in the swimming pool tonight with the promise he’d keep an eye on the waterproof patch she’d placed over his wound. He’d also agreed to apply some antibiotic cream to the cut and put another patch on when he was finished his swim.

“I ordered a few supplies in from the States. You said you were having a craving for some of Mrs. McAdam’s apple pie so I put in an order,” she said hurriedly.

Daniel smiled and his mouth watered at the thought of the dessert one of his cooks loved to make him. But he quickly sobered. Madilyn usually didn’t give in to his cravings. She had no problem reminding him that he needed to stop with his impulsiveness because it would make him look like a rich snob to others. Well, he was self-made rich but he didn’t want to appear to be a spoiled snob. Yet to order an apple pie from one of his cooks? Now who was being impulsive?

“What else did you get me?” he questioned curiously. He rather liked this side of Madilyn. It made him feel as if they shared a rare camaraderie.

She looked stunned at his question and damn if her cheeks didn’t get a wee bit red. What in the world was going on with her tonight?

“Hoist up those towels into my arms. What makes you think I got you something else?”

“Umm, because you just said you were flying in a few things…”

“Oh? Did I?” She shook her head and he placed the load of folded towels into her outstretched arms. “Off you go for your swim. I have to put these away.”

Why did he get the feeling he was being dismissed?

“Pie and coffee after I finish my swim?” he asked.

  “What?”

Madilyn furrowed her brows and a stray lock of red hair whispered out from her tightly bound bun. She looked tired. He might as well let her call it a night.

  “Never mind.”

She nodded and began a quick walk out of the laundry room.

“Don’t swim too long,” she called over her shoulder. “And don’t forget the antibiotic cream when you finish.”

Before he could answer she was gone.

“Okay, okay,” he mumbled to himself. In the few minutes it took him to stroll through the length of his four-thousand-square-foot estate to the back garden area and his outdoor swimming pool, he pondered.

He hadn’t seen the twenty-five-year-old acting absent-minded in quite some time. He’d met her at a gay bar many years ago. She’d just broken up with a longtime girlfriend and she’d been crying into a frosted beer in a corner booth.

He’d felt sorry for her and struck up a conversation and they’d been friends ever since. When he’d been able to afford her, he’d asked her to become his chief of staff and also his
private assistant, which now included personal housekeeping and sometimes extended to her cooking for him. It was a lot of work for one person and he often wondered if keeping her with him was good for her private life—which was nonexistent as far as he could tell.

Usually her nervous attitude meant she was up to something but he was too tired to worry about it now. His hip was sore and he just wanted to relax in the pool.

As he stepped outside and stood beneath the canopied deck area, seagulls screamed, doves cooed and the crash of waves upon the nearby sandy beaches greeted him. His private estate was perched on a hillside of his island and it offered a sweeping vista of the Caribbean forest on his land as well as a glimpse at some of the other islands dotting the nearby ocean.

He drew his interest to his swimming environment. Buttery streaks of light from dozens of moon-glow lamps radiated off the nearby beige stone patio and a cool night-time trade wind whipped against his face and rustled against the jungle-like plants that surrounded his blue-hued, oval-shaped pool. He pressed a button on the nearby wall and a small gas fire flickered to life in the nearby outdoor fireplace. The firelight would keep him company while he swam.

His day staff had already left the island to go home to their families via the daily boat shuttle arranged for them. Madilyn, who lived in her own separate quarters in the house, knew not to bother him during his evening swims, so he had no qualms about swimming nude. Strobe lights illuminated the water, which looked very inviting.

He didn’t waste any time ditching the towel and his robe. After a quick inspection to make sure the patch was secure over his wound, he took a deep breath and dove in. Cool water embraced him, instantly soothing his injury. He smiled to himself as he thought about why he was staying here for an extended break.

Dr. Sander Jonas had ordered him to. A couple of weeks ago Sander had given Daniel his semi-annual physical and stress tests and he had discovered a bit of strain on Daniel’s heart.

Sander had blamed it on Daniel’s workaholic ways and the hot-looking doctor had been adamant that Daniel take an immediate one-month vacation. He was one week into it and he was already itching to get back to running his multibillion-dollar car-parts corporation.

Drowning in work would be a good way to get his sexy doctor off his mind. He’d known Sander for years and considered him a good friend but since Daniel’s breakup with Jacques, Daniel had been thinking way too much about Sander.

Actually he had been thinking about Sander for quite a while even before the volatile breakup. Although Sander had acted like the strictest professional, when Daniel had seen him for his checkup there had been some fascinating undertone fluttering through the air between them, especially in the tender way the doctor had handled Daniel’s cock and balls during the physical exam.

Daniel flipped over to a back float and stared up at the stars bursting in the twilight sky. Maybe the feeling had just been one-sided. Maybe it was just dreaming on his part due to his loneliness. Whatever it had been, he needed to stop thinking about Sander in that way. Sander was his doctor and a very caring one at that. Daniel knew too that Sander would never cross that ethical line even if Daniel made his feelings about him known.

Sander waited several minutes inside a small shelter near the airfield and watched the jet take off before he walked across the rest of the airfield. As he strolled he inhaled the fresh July night air in a desperate effort to calm his jittery nerves. In a matter of minutes he would be face-to-face with the man of his desires and fantasies. Excitement and fear mingled, yet he knew he needed to confess his feelings. Both for his own sanity and for the sake of bringing their friendship to a new level.

A moment later Sander hopped into one of several golf carts Madilyn had instructed him to use. Twisting the key he found in the ignition, he drove along the lamplit trail past an abundance of gently swaying palm trees. According to the assistant no one but Daniel would be home. Madilyn said she was late for an appointment and that Sander would have to let himself in because Daniel was in the swimming pool. After her instructions she’d quickly ascended the stairs, waved goodbye to him and disappeared into the plane.

He’d met her many times over the years at parties Daniel and Jacques had thrown and this was the first time she’d acted so…weird. Normally she behaved like a friendly, cool-headed professional. Her being flustered and hurried tonight was totally out of the norm. Sander shrugged off his concern about her odd behavior and concentrated on driving along the pathway.

A few minutes later the route opened up into a large yard. About three hundred yards away, he spied the estate home Daniel had recently purchased as one of his several holiday homes.

The building was impressive and immense. The middle area was three stories high and there were two-story add-ons on both sides. The estate had been built from light-colored flagstone accented with dark, square log beams and plenty of windows. He noted most of the roof areas on the additions were also glass and that several doorways were arched Spanish-style.

Sander smiled. Daniel had picked a nice place. He just hoped his patient was relaxing and not being his usual workaholic self or there would be hell to pay.

Parking the cart, he entered the building. The foyer was grand with several stunning crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Winding copper staircases rose along each side of the walls and a large arched doorway straight ahead beckoned him into the living room. The interior had a similar theme as the outside with flagstone walls emphasized with dark square logs and ample windows. Very nice.

Since this was his first time here, where was the pool? And was it a good idea for Daniel to be swimming alone in this massive place? Sander shook his head. Cripes, he was being a mother hen. Sure, Daniel’s tests showed his heart was stressed but it didn’t mean the man was a heart attack about to happen.

Sander frowned. Maybe he had overreacted in sending Daniel on a vacation. Would he have deemed it necessary for any other patient? Normally he’d tell them to reduce their stress levels and change their diets and get more exercise. But Daniel ate well and he exercised daily. Perhaps Sander cared too much—that was why he’d ordered the vacation. He needed to loosen up and not take Daniel’s health so seriously.

A few minutes later he strolled out into the garden. Splashing erupted from behind a clump of overflowing green bushes. He followed a well-lit path and stopped when he saw Daniel. He was doing the backstroke and kicking his legs while he maneuvered himself around the large pool.

Sander swallowed and tensed. With all the lamps glowing around and in the pool, he had no trouble making out the fact Daniel was swimming completely nude. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t seen his patient naked before. He was his doctor but he’d managed to keep things strictly professional on a face-to-face basis.

The thought that Daniel was on the market now—and that someone else might snap him up if Sander didn’t get off his ass and make his move—overwhelmed him to the point his self-control was quickly unraveling. Tightly held feelings of sexual need and deeply hidden thoughts of self-denial welled. Maybe he actually did have a chance at a relationship with him.

He caught a glimpse of Daniel’s semi-erect shaft as the water caressed his flesh. He groaned softly as his balls and cock swelled and his breath grew excessively fast for his reaction to be professional. Daniel cursed himself for being so weak and for being so damn hung up on a man he had no business being hung up on.

The cool water soothed Daniel’s warm body yet irritated his sore hip as he kicked his legs in the water. Due to the ache, he stopped and simply floated around on his back.

It was nice out here. Quiet and relaxing. Maybe he could get used to this leisurely lifestyle. He was a billionaire. He didn’t need to work. He could delegate. He’d been a workaholic for so long he’d forgotten there was a whole different way of life he could pursue.

Perhaps that was why his relationship with Jacques had failed. They’d both been too
occupied with their careers. Jacques with traveling and selling his popular oil paintings and watercolors throughout Europe and Daniel being busy with his auto parts empire.

A tinge of sadness whispered through him yet again about being on this beautiful island without a partner. But he clamped down on his sorrow. He’d just have to get used to it, especially if he decided to continue his workaholic ways.

Suddenly he had the feeling he wasn’t alone out here. Was someone watching him? He flipped off his back and began to tread water. Peering around at the lush jungle vegetation and deck area, he saw no one. But was that a delicate spicy scent wafting through the air?

He smiled. That fragrance reminded him of the aftershave lotion Sander wore. He’d always liked the way the doctor smelled. But why the hell was he thinking Sander could be here? He was thousands of miles away back in the States following his dream of helping the less fortunate.

Daniel admired his doctor for doing what he wanted with his life. Time on this planet was limited and it was best to follow your heart before it was too late. That last thought, along with the spicy scent that suddenly lingered more heavily in the air, rocked through him.

Maybe he was having one of those light-bulb moments or an epiphany. He had only so much time in this body and he was wasting it by working his ass off and not really following what he truly craved in life, which was to be wanted, needed and loved by someone. Someone like Dr. Sander Jonas.

Movement from a dark area of the garden caught Daniel’s attention. Uneasiness shifted through him as he spied a silhouette standing there. Cripes, if he didn’t know better, it looked like…

He breathed a sigh of relief as Sander stepped into the light. He had a shy grin on his face. When he waved and shouted a hello, Daniel figured he was fantasizing as he watched Sander set his black bag on a nearby chaise and gaze around with curiosity and appreciation.

“Nice place,” he commented and focused his attention back on Daniel.
